The Estates Theatre is recognized by its neoclassical facade rising over the Ovocný trh, or Fruit Market, in Prague’s Old Town. Completed in seventeen eighty-three by architect Anton Haffenecker, the building was commissioned by the aristocrat František Antonín Count Nostitz Rieneck to serve as a venue for the public. Inscribed above the main entrance is the motto Patriae et Musis, meaning To the Homeland and the Muses.
