The Nubian Museum in Aswan is identifiable by its exterior of local sandstone and pink granite, designed with traditional domes and vaults that mirror the rocky landscape. Inaugurated in nineteen ninety-seven, the building grew out of an international UNESCO campaign that began in nineteen sixty to save archaeological sites from being submerged by the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam.
