Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan

The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan rises from Salah al-Din Square with limestone walls that climb like cliffs toward the sky, dwarfing the surrounding streets. This monumental complex, which stretches one hundred fifty meters in length, is defined by an entrance portal that towers thirty-eight meters high. Commissioned in thirteen fifty-six by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan, the structure was designed to house the four primary Sunni schools of Islamic jurisprudence within a single, massive cruciform layout.
