The Mosque of Ibn Tulun is distinguished by its vast, open courtyard and a singular spiral minaret that rises above the surrounding neighborhood. Completed in eight seventy-nine, it was commissioned by Ahmad ibn Tulun, a ruler who sought to establish Egypt as a power independent of the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad. The structure sits atop a rise known as Gebel Yashkur, chosen for its prominence within the capital city he founded, Al-Qata'i.
