The Mosque of Amr ibn al-As is the first mosque built in Egypt and on the entire African continent. It is defined by its vast, quiet courtyard and long history of reconstruction, having been rebuilt many times since its initial founding in the year six hundred forty-one. Its architecture has evolved from a modest structure of mud brick and palm wood into the expansive, pillared complex that exists here today in the neighborhood of Fustat.
