The Ordenspalais once stood on the northern corner of Wilhelmplatz and Wilhelmstraße. Originally commissioned in seventeen thirty-seven by King Frederick William the First, the building became the Berlin legation for the Order of Saint John, from which it drew its name. The palace was later remodeled in the nineteenth century by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel for Prince Charles of Prussia, featuring an interior staircase made of cast iron that was considered revolutionary at the time.
