Monastery of Prophet Elias of Thira

The Monastery of Prophet Elias stands at the summit of the island’s highest peak, five hundred sixty-seven meters above the sea. You can recognize the site by its stone, fortress-style architecture and the prominent bell tower that rises against the rugged mountain landscape. Founded in seventeen eleven by two brothers from the nearby village of Pyrgos, the complex was designed to withstand coastal threats while serving as a secure center for the local community.
