Jewish Cemetery

historic

The Jewish Cemetery in Rhodes is marked by rows of headstones that have been excavated from the earth and carefully repositioned to stand above the soil once again. Located outside the Old City along the road to Kallithea, this site holds the history of a community that was forced to relocate its dead during the Italian occupation of the nineteen thirties. In nineteen thirty-eight, the fascist governor Cesare Maria De Vecchi ordered the closure of the original cemetery near the Koskinou Gate to make room for a public park.
