Vivekananda House is recognizable by its distinctive semi-circular Victorian facade and its position overlooking Marina Beach. Originally constructed in eighteen forty-two by the American businessman Frederic Tudor, the structure was known as the Ice House. It served as a commercial facility for storing blocks of frozen freshwater shipped from New England to tropical India. After the ice business ceased operations in the eighteen eighties, the property was purchased by a lawyer named Biligiri Iyengar, who remodeled it into a private residence he called Castle Kernan.
