Roman Catholic Cemetery, Agra

historic

The Roman Catholic Cemetery in Agra is identifiable by an array of elaborate, Mughal-style tombs that feature domes, arches, and sandstone carvings, distinguishing it from typical burial grounds. Established in the early seventeenth century, this site is recognized as the oldest Christian graveyard in North India. It originated on land reportedly granted by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir to the city's Armenian community, and it later became the final resting place for various European merchants, Jesuit priests, and mercenaries who settled in the region during the Mughal and colonial periods.
