Kumartuli

Kumartuli consists of a maze of narrow, winding alleys in North Kolkata where the air carries the scent of wet mud and straw. Hundreds of cramped, thatched workshops spill their contents into the streets, creating a dense forest of clay idols in various stages of completion. These statues sit drying in the sun, ranging from small figurines to massive, ten-foot-tall figures of gods and goddesses.
