The Gedhe Mataram Kotagede Mosque sits within a quiet, historic district, surrounded by a large yard filled with sawo kecik trees. As the oldest mosque in Yogyakarta, it displays traditional Javanese architecture that reflects a long history of cultural cooperation. When the structure was first established in the late sixteenth century, Hindu and Buddhist residents assisted in the construction, helping to design the site and build the entrance gates.
