Bewley’s Grafton Street is recognizable by the vibrant Egyptian Revival mosaic that covers its façade. This architectural detail, inspired by the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb in nineteen twenty-two, distinguishes the building from the surrounding shops on this busy thoroughfare. The café opened in nineteen twenty-seven, established by Ernest Bewley, whose family were Quakers who had pioneered the direct importation of tea from China to Ireland nearly a century earlier.
