The Ponte alla Carraia is a five-arched bridge spanning the Arno River with a low, wide silhouette that connects the historic city center to the Oltrarno district. First built in twelve eighteen as a wooden structure called the Ponte Nuovo, the crossing functioned to move heavy wagons, or carra, across the water.
