The Area Marina Protetta Parco Sommerso di Gaiola is defined by two small islands connected by a narrow bridge that rise just a few meters off the coast of Posillipo. This protected marine zone spans forty-two hectares of sea between the village of Marechiaro and the Bay of Trentaremi. It preserves a rare fusion of natural Mediterranean biodiversity and submerged Roman ruins, which settled beneath the waves due to bradyseism, a volcanic phenomenon that causes the ground to slowly sink.
