Palazzo Toscanelli sits on the Lungarno Mediceo, distinguished by a Renaissance-style facade with prominent grey sandstone mouldings around its windows and doorway. Commissioned in the first half of the sixteenth century by the merchant Bartolomeo Lanfranchi, the building was later renovated by the architect Francesco Mosca in fifteen seventy-six and again in the nineteenth century by Alessandro Gherardesca. Since nineteen thirteen, it has housed the Pisa State Archives, which preserves historic documents from the Pisan Republic.
