The Genko Borui is a remnant of a massive, twenty-kilometer-long stone defensive wall constructed along the coast of Hakata Bay in the thirteenth century. You can identify these sites by the exposed stone masonry and earthen embankments that once formed a solid barricade against the Mongol Empire. Following the first invasion of twelve seventy-four, the Kamakura Shogunate ordered the construction of this barrier, originally called Ishitsuiji, to prevent further landings by Yuan dynasty forces.
