Kōenji Hikawa Shrine

religious

Kōenji Hikawa Shrine is marked by the presence of a small, separate pavilion on its grounds known as Kisho Jinja, the only shrine in Japan dedicated specifically to the weather. While the main Hikawa site dates back centuries to the Kamakura or Sengoku periods, the weather pavilion arrived here only after the Second World War. It was originally built in nineteen forty-four by the Imperial Japanese Army’s meteorological department as a spiritual site for forecasters to pray for accurate predictions.
