Chanko Kawasaki

Chanko Kawasaki is a small, low-rise building in the Ryogoku district that stands out as one of the few surviving examples of traditional shitamachi architecture in a neighborhood often associated with modern sumo activity. Established in nineteen thirty-seven by a former sumo wrestler named Yokoteyama, it is recognized as the first restaurant in Japan to serve chanko nabe, the protein-rich hot pot stew traditionally consumed by wrestlers to build mass.
