The Senso-ji Hondo features a dramatically sloping, tall roof that distinguishes it from the surrounding temple structures. As the primary hall of Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, this building houses the sacred statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. According to legend, two fishermen discovered this golden figure in the Sumida River in the year six twenty-eight, and the temple was founded to honor it.
