The Nitemmon Gate serves as a quiet eastern entrance to the Senso-ji temple complex, distinguished by the two Buddhist guardian statues housed within its frame. Unlike the larger, more famous gates of the temple, this structure was originally constructed in sixteen eighteen to protect a nearby Toshogu shrine. When that shrine burned down in sixteen forty-two, this gate remained as the only surviving piece of the site.
