The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is defined by its massive, wide-reaching facade made of greenish cantera stone. This facade resembles an ornate, folded screen or a monumental altarpiece, a design that intentionally keeps the building's profile low and heavy to withstand the region's frequent earthquakes. Construction began in sixteen eighty-two, and the sanctuary was finished in sixteen ninety to house the image of the Virgin of Solitude, the patron saint of Oaxaca.
