Swayambhu Mahachaitya is a massive white dome topped by a gilded spire that glows against the hill it occupies west of Kathmandu. Painted on the square structure above the dome are the all-seeing eyes of Buddha, which watch over the valley in every direction. This site, often called the Monkey Temple due to the resident macaques that roam the grounds, is one of the oldest religious centers in Nepal.
