Freyberg Square is defined by a series of intersecting concrete terraces and stairs that cascade down its north-facing slope. First opened in nineteen forty-six, this public space sits in the heart of Auckland’s central business district, serving as the threshold for the Ellen Melville Centre. The square is named for Lord Bernard Cyril Freyberg, a decorated military commander who served as Governor-General of New Zealand from nineteen forty-six to nineteen fifty-two.
