Xingping is defined by its setting on a sharp, U-shaped bend of the Li River, surrounded by towering karst peaks that appear in the background of the twenty-yuan banknote. This riverside town, located in Yangshuo County, traces its origins to two hundred sixty-five AD, when it served as the administrative seat of Xiping County.
