Wenshu Yuan Monastery is the best-preserved Buddhist temple in Chengdu, recognizable by its extensive complex of dark wood halls, curved roofs, and traditional gardens that occupy thirteen acres within the city. Originally built as Xinxiang Temple, the monastery gained its current name in sixteen eighty-one during the reign of Emperor Kangxi.
