Colon Obelisk & Philippine Historical Marker

historic

The Colon Obelisk stands as a tall, granite pillar in the middle of a street intersection, marking a point widely cited as the oldest thoroughfare in the Philippines. This monument identifies the area as the site of the first Spanish settlement in Cebu, established under the leadership of the Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in fifteen sixty-five. The street itself takes its name from Cristóbal Colón, known in English as Christopher Columbus.
