The Sandeman cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia are marked by an imposing granite building that has lined the Douro riverfront since seventeen ninety-seven. Founded in seventeen ninety by George Sandeman, the son of a Scottish cabinetmaker, the company was one of the first to brand its casks with a hot iron to guarantee the quality of its wine.
