Luís I Bridge

The Luís I Bridge is defined by its massive iron arch that spans one hundred seventy-two meters across the Douro River, supporting two stacked decks of traffic between the historic center of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Completed in eighteen eighty-six by the Belgian company Société de Willebroeck, the structure rises forty-five meters above the water. Its designer, Théophile Seyrig, had previously collaborated with Gustave Eiffel on a railway bridge located further upriver, but this project was Seyrig's independent commission.
