Fonseca Port Wine Cellars

The Fonseca cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia are marked by rows of aging wooden vats and the heavy, pervasive scent of maturing Port wine. Since the company began formal operations in eighteen fifteen, these lodges have been central to a business that helped establish Vintage Port as a globally recognized classic. The firm earned early prominence under the guidance of Manuel Pedro Guimaraens, who steered the company through the political instability of the nineteenth century, including a period of exile during the Portuguese Liberal Wars.
