Portobello Road Market is easily recognized by the rows of brightly painted, multi-colored terraced buildings that line the mile-long stretch of road. What began in the eighteen hundreds as a simple path called Green Lane, serving a growing local population with fresh fruit and vegetables, evolved over the decades into a sprawling commercial hub. It takes its name from Portobello Farm, a property established in the eighteenth century to honor a British naval victory at the Battle of Porto Bello in Panama.
