The Fairfield Heritage Centre occupies a grand, red sandstone building on Govan Road that once served as the headquarters for the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company. Completed in eighteen ninety-one, its architecture reflects a time when Govan was the global center of shipbuilding. The building was designed by the firm Honeyman and Keppie, where a young Charles Rennie Mackintosh worked as an assistant. The ornate lobby and the wide, light-filled drawing offices upstairs were built to project the prestige of a company that constructed some of the largest and fastest passenger liners and warships of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
