Cow Palace

The Cow Palace is a massive arena in Daly City defined by a concrete and steel roof that spans nearly six acres. It opened in nineteen forty-one after being built with federal funds during the Great Depression. The unusual name comes from a local newspaper article that questioned the spending of public money on a facility for livestock while people were starving, asking why the government should build a palace for cows. The name stuck, though the building quickly became a destination for much more than agricultural events.
