The Baylands Ranger Station occupies a structure that once served as the harbor master’s cottage for the Palo Alto Yacht Harbor. The harbor, which opened to accommodate local boaters in the nineteen-twenties, fell into disuse as the surrounding waters silted in over the decades. After the yacht harbor officially closed in nineteen eighty-six, the city repurposed the former master’s cottage to house staff tasked with overseeing the nineteen-hundred-forty-acre nature preserve.
