The Biltmore Hotel stands out in Coral Gables for its massive, central tower, which was inspired by the medieval Giralda bell tower of the cathedral in Seville. Completed in January of nineteen twenty-six, the hotel was the centerpiece of developer George Merrick’s plan to build a stately, Mediterranean-style suburb he called The City Beautiful. At the time of its opening, the structure reached three hundred and fifteen feet, making it the tallest building in all of Florida.
