Ball & Chain occupies a historic white and green building on Calle Ocho, easily identified by the sound of live Latin music drifting out to the sidewalk. Since opening in nineteen thirty-five, the venue has anchored this stretch of Little Havana through decades of transformation. During its first two decades, it operated as a jazz club where performers like Billie Holiday, Count Basie, and Chet Baker appeared on stage, often defying the era's segregated club norms in Miami.
