Munroe Tavern is a wooden structure with a distinct red exterior that has stood on Massachusetts Avenue since seventeen thirty-five. While it began as a local public house owned by William Munroe, it is best known for the role it played on the afternoon of April nineteenth, seventeen seventy-five. As British troops retreated from Concord toward Boston, General Earl Percy commandeered the building to serve as his temporary field headquarters and a makeshift hospital for his wounded men.
