The American Swedish Institute is defined by the Turnblad Mansion, a towering structure of Indiana limestone featuring turrets and stone gargoyles that give it the appearance of a European castle. Built between nineteen oh three and nineteen oh eight, this thirty-three room residence was commissioned by Swan Turnblad, a Swedish immigrant who rose from modest means to own the Svenska Amerikanska Posten, the largest Swedish-language newspaper in the United States.
