The Minneapolis Institute of Art is defined by a massive neoclassical portico of white Hardwick granite, where six fluted Greek columns support a roof that looms over the street. Founded in eighteen eighty-three by a small group of local citizens, the institution began with art displayed in a downtown library. By nineteen fifteen, the museum had moved into this permanent building in the Whittier neighborhood, constructed on land donated by Clinton Morrison in memory of his father.
