Low Memorial Library is a massive, Neoclassical structure crowned by a broad granite dome. You can identify it by its prominent temple-front entrance, which features ten fluted Ionic columns and an attic story inscribed with the words The Library of Columbia University. Built between eighteen ninety-five and eighteen ninety-seven, the building was the first major project on the Morningside Heights campus. It was funded by a one-million-dollar donation from university president Seth Low, who named the structure in honor of his father, Abiel Abbot Low.
