The Portland Japanese Garden is defined by its hillside location in Washington Park, where it occupies the former site of the old city zoo. Spanning twelve and a half acres, the space is built upon what was once described as an abandoned, rocky brownfield. Its design features five distinct historical garden styles, a departure from the singular style typical of most Japanese gardens. These spaces were envisioned as a way to forge a healing connection between the people of Portland and Japan in the years following World War Two.
