The Rothko Chapel is a windowless, octagonal building on Yupon Street that houses fourteen monumental, dark-hued paintings by the artist Mark Rothko. Founded by philanthropists Dominique and John de Menil and dedicated in nineteen seventy-one, it functions as an ecumenical sanctuary open to people of all faiths. Outside, a reflecting pool holds the sculpture Broken Obelisk by Barnett Newman, which is dedicated to the memory of Martin Luther King Junior.
