The Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral is defined by its sober neoclassical facade, where twin bell towers frame a central triangular pediment. Located on Plaza Constitución in the historic Ciudad Vieja district, the cathedral stands directly across from the Cabildo, an arrangement that for centuries marked the intersection of the city’s religious and civic life. The current structure, which replaced a simpler brick church from seventeen forty, began construction in seventeen ninety and reached its consecration in eighteen hundred and four.
