Waverley Cemetery stretches across the clifftops of Bronte, defined by its extensive collection of white Carrara marble monuments that catch the light against the Tasman Sea. Opened in eighteen seventy-seven, the site was developed by the Waverley Municipal Council as a response to the city’s rapidly shrinking burial space. Its Victorian-era design was intended to move away from the grim reputation of older graveyards, creating instead a park-like environment where families could honor the deceased.
