Craigdarroch Castle

historic

Craigdarroch Castle is defined by its dramatic vertical profile and steep rooflines, which stand out as an elaborate example of the Scottish Baronial style on a hilltop overlooking Victoria. Built between eighteen eighty-seven and eighteen ninety, the four-story mansion was commissioned by Robert Dunsmuir, a Scottish immigrant who became the wealthiest man in British Columbia through the coal industry. The name itself is Gaelic for "rocky oak place," reflecting the rugged landscape where Dunsmuir chose to assert his status as an industrial leader.
