Toronto Necropolis

The Toronto Necropolis is marked by its distinctive High Victorian Gothic entrance and chapel, built from yellow brick in eighteen seventy-two. Designed by architect Henry Langley, these buildings sit at the end of Winchester Street in the Cabbagetown neighborhood. Established in eighteen fifty, the cemetery was created as a non-denominational burial ground to replace the overcrowded Strangers' Burying Ground. It was laid out according to the garden cemetery movement, which treated burial sites as picturesque, park-like spaces with winding paths and mature trees.
