The Mosque of Muhammad Ali is defined by its two slender, eighty-four-meter-tall minarets that rise above the Citadel of Cairo. Built between eighteen thirty and eighteen forty-eight, the structure is faced with alabaster on its lower walls and courtyard, earning it the common name of the Alabaster Mosque. Its Ottoman design, featuring a grand central dome flanked by semi-domes, intentionally departed from the Mamluk architectural traditions that previously dominated the city.
