The Confluence district is defined by its futuristic, jagged architecture and its position at the southern tip of the Lyon peninsula, where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet. Once a landscape of marshy islands and later a gritty zone of industrial warehouses, gasworks, and slaughterhouses, this area spent most of the twentieth century as an isolated patch of brownfield land behind the Perrache railway station. Beginning in two thousand three, the city initiated a major urban renewal project to transform this neglected territory into a sustainable residential and cultural hub.
