Centre d'Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation

museum

The Centre d’Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation occupies a compound of late nineteenth-century buildings that once served as a military health school. Its red brick walls and tree-lined courtyard are situated on Avenue Berthelot, a site chosen specifically for its history during the German occupation. In June nineteen forty-three, the school was requisitioned by the Gestapo, and for the following year, it served as the headquarters for Klaus Barbie, the man known as the butcher of Lyon.
