The Place de la République is defined by the large, rectangular water pool at its center, where multiple jets break the surface of the basin. Situated in the heart of the Presqu'île, this square emerged in the mid-nineteenth century as part of an ambitious urban transformation directed by the prefect Claude-Marius Vaïsse. To stabilize a city troubled by repeated insurrections, the government demolished dense clusters of narrow alleys and carved out wide, straight avenues and open spaces that could be easily managed.
